Jay's Jazz Journeys: March 10th - 12th
Thursday March 10th
My Jazz weekend started with a twist. Normally, the H.O.M.E. Beverly Hills Thursday Night Jazz Jam kicks off the party. But, it got big-footed by Hollywood.
The reality show, Love and Hip Hop Hollywood took over the supper club. Oh well... that's showbiz. There's always next week.
But, it did give me a chance to get out and about to shows I've been missing on Thursdays, namely Masta and the Edge of Soul (pictured at Aldabella) at the Riviera Restaurant and Lounge.
What an awesome voice and entertainer. If you're not going to the Jam and in the Calabassas area on Thursday, make this your spot!
Friday March 11th
Friday marked the return of vocalist Sandra Booker
to the Aldabella Winery in Westlake Village. As a Jazz styist, she is truly unmatched. Sandra was joined by the always dynamic Dori Amarillio on guitar and the steady hand of Ian Martin on bass. The crowd was stunned by an impromptu duet between Sanda and Masta. Tears were flowing.
Saturday March 12th
What a fantastic Saturday! First, the Barry White tribute master, JD Hall, tore the house down at the Typhoon Restaurant in Santa Monica. It was
standing room only as the 6'5" master entertainer went through the big voiced legend's classics! Then, a quick trip to Beverly Hills where Jazz stylist Martha Taylor-LaCroix
was amazing as usual. She truly has a style that is all her own, but as classic and elegant as the days of Fitzgerald, Billie and Clooney. And it never hurts to have the great pianist Karen Hernandez on board, either.
I just count it all joy. See you next week.
Jazz Quote of the Week: "I say, play your own way. Don’t play what the public wants. You play what you want and let the public pick up on what you’re doing? Even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years." - Thelonious Monk
